Imperial College London Diabetes Centre

Emirates International Specialist Hospital , the super-speciality destination hospital in Abu Dhabi, and the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre have announced a strategic collaboration to jointly treat patients suffering from obesity, providing comprehensive expertise in treatment and care that includes obesity management and bariatric surgery.

Both parts of Mubadala’s healthcare network, the partnership between Emirates International Specialist Hospital and the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre bring super-specialty care to patients by addressing the complex and individual needs of obese people. With the partnership, Emirates International Specialist Hospital ’s Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Centre treats obese patients who require specialist services in collaboration with Imperial College London Diabetes Centre to provide a multi-disciplinary approach in tackling the disease and related complications. Patients identified as good candidates for surgery follow a program of dietary education and psychological support tailored to suit their needs. With the combined strength of both organisations, patients are assured of continuous care and extensive follow up post-surgery.

Obesity is a growing epidemic throughout the Middle East, affecting men, women and children. According to a study by the Health Metrics and Evaluation Institute, more than 58 percent of men and 65 percent of women in the region are considered overweight or obese and a growing number of children are battling weight issues from a young age. Here in the UAE, rates of obesity are twice the global average, and in fact, expatriates often double their obesity rate within 5 years of relocating here. Obesity can lead to a number of serious health complications if left untreated, including blindness, kidney failure, lower-limb amputation, and high blood pressure, and can also increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease.

“With the alarming rate of obesity in the Middle East and the associated costs of care, we need to take a holistic approach to both prevention and treatment, creating programs that will help our patients, as well as the entire region. Obesity and associated complications place a huge burden on healthcare costs, as well as personnel costs, and it is up to medical institutions to find solutions in tackling this disease and helping individuals manage their treatment programs and avoid complications. As a leading institution for diabetes care, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre wants to maximize our expertise by cooperating with Emirates International Specialist Hospital to come up with effective treatment plans that work and respond to our patients as individuals,” said Dr Saf Naqvi, Medical Director and Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at ICLDC.

ICLDC’s on-site team of dietitians and specialists collaborate with Emirates International Specialist Hospital ’s experts to provide monitoring, support and education to patients seeking weight loss surgery, as well as to those who have already undergone weight loss surgery.

Dr. Mohammed Al Hadad, Consultant General Surgeon and head of the Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery Centre at Emirates International Specialist Hospital said: “Undergoing bariatric surgery is a lifelong commitment. Emirates International Specialist Hospital surgeons and my team, along with Imperial College London Diabetes Centre physicians work hand in hand to ensure that the patient is taken care of for life and not just in time for surgery. This program is the first of its kind and creates the best possible outcome for patients suffering from diabetes and obesity. It is very rewarding for us to witness how successful this approach is and how it is changing our patients’ lives.”

As one of the four centres of clinical excellence at Emirates International Specialist Hospital , the Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery Centre has expertise in delivering world-class services to obese patients who suffer from diabetes and need a life-changing solution.
