Emirates International Specialist Hospital and Manchester City Football Club shares best practices in Sports Medicine at Abu Dhabi Summit

Sports Medicine Summit - 2

The summit welcomed around 300 hundred doctors, physiotherapists and other clinicians who attended to learn about the latest evidence-based developments in the treatment of sports injuries and related-disciplines held at Yas Viceroy Hotel, Abu Dhabi over the weekend.

As the regional healthcare partner of Manchester City Football Club, Emirates International Specialist Hospital , part of Mubadala’s network of world-class healthcare providers, initiated the program to share best practices for treating athletes and patients with sports-related injuries. With the expertise from both Emirates International Specialist Hospital and MCFC, the summit facilitated knowledge sharing between the two organizations as well as elevating the quality of care offered to athletes and other patients suffering from sports injuries throughout the country.

Dr. Nader Darwich, Medical Director, Emirates International Specialist Hospital said: “Once again, we brought the summit to the practitioners within the Sports Medicine field in the UAE to cascade the learnings from this one-day conference for the benefit of the wider community. With a plethora of sports activities hosted in the UAE and more residents taking up fitness regimens, it has become vitally important and relevant for our doctors to increase their knowledge in handling injuries related to an active lifestyle.” Dr. Darwich presented his latest report on the incidence of knee ligament injuries (or anterior cruciate ligament also known as ACL) which was higher in the GCC. In North America, ACL injuries were observed in one out of 3,000 people.

Dr. Darwich noted that the higher incidence in the UAE and the rest of the GCC was due to more people suffering from loose joints, muscle strength, playing surface, and poor warm-up before strenuous activities.

Present during the summit where pain and management experts from MCFC such as: Dr. Massimiliano (Max) Sala, Head of Sports Medicine, First Team, Manchester City; Federico Genovesi, Sports Therapist, First Team, Manchester City; Helen Sandall, Lead Physiotherapist, Women’s Team, Manchester City; and Dr. Ramón Cugat Bertomeu, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon who works with Manchester City FC.

Speakers from both local and international organizations also tackled relevant topics such as injuries and orthopedic treatments in sport; clinical application of platelet-rich plasma in professional football; sport dentistry; and injury risk for women in football, amongst others.

Participants who completed the summit earned five continued medical education (CME) credits.
